Introduction

This Website is a personal photographic record of a 10 day Great Rail Journey Tour to the Harz Mountains & Rhine Valley, Germany in June 2016.

The Tour commenced at St. Pancras with a journey via Eurostar to Brussels, Belgium. From here we travelled with Talys to Cologne for an overnight stay. The next leg of the tour was by DB ICE train to Hannover then by coach to Wernigerode foir a four night stay in the Harz Mountains calling in at the former mining town of Goslar on the way.

Day 3 of the Tour was a steam hauled return trip on the Brocken Railway followed on Day 4 by another steam hauled trip on the Selketal Railway and a visit to Quedlinburg before retuning to Wernigerode by coach.

On Day 5 we had free time in Wernigerode which allowed us to visit the Castle on a hill overlooking the town.

Day 6 saw us make the journey by coach & train to Assmannshausen for a four night stay in the Rhine Valley with a stopover at Frankfurt. On Day 7 we took a all day Cruise on the River Rhine to Boppard and return.

More free time was enjoyed on Day 8 which allowed us to take the chair lift up from Assmannshausen to Neiderwald followed by a cable car ride down to Ruddesheim and return to Assmannshausen by local train.

On Day 9 we travelled by coach to Heidelberg including a walking guided tour of the town followed by a trip on the funicular railway to the castle. After some free time we returned to Assmannshausen by coach.

On Day 10 we made the return to London via Cologne and Brussels and then travelled home to Bicester via Chiltern Railways.
